According to a recent news article ‘awesome’ is one of the most popular words that our society uses and abuses. No matter where you go you can always hear someone say ‘that’s awesome!’ And it can cover anything from a beautiful view to a Subway sandwich.
I guess the cultural phenomenon that sums up our modern usage of ‘awesome‘ is the catchy and addictive theme song from the LEGO Movie ‘everything is awesome’.
But is everything awesome?
Last week on TED a slightly crazy woman urged us to use ‘awesome’ more appropriately. But even she misses the point of ‘awesome’ at the end of the talk.
Awesome actually means: causing feelings of fear and wonder : causing feelings of awe (Webster). You can hardly say that a Loom Band created by a 6 year old creates a sense of fear and wonder.
Everything is not awesome.
In fact, I can’t think of many things that actually are truly awesome.
The Bible doesn’t teach that everything is awesome. Rather, the Bible teaches us that everything and everyone should acknowledge that there is only One who is truly awesome. There is only One whom we should fear and wonder at. Our creator – God.
So, what makes God awesome?
He is awesome in:
Glory (Exodus 15:11)
Deeds like bringing Israel out of Egypt (Deuteronomy 4:34)
Showing no partiality or injustice (Deuteronomy 10:17)
Giving the Israelites the Promised Land(2 Samuel 7:23)
Keeping His Covenant of Love (Nehemiah 1:5)
Majesty (Job 37:22)
Giving power and strength to His people (Psalm 68:35)
Name (Psalm 99:3)
This is what makes God truly awesome: God created us, even when He didn’t need to. He didn’t lack anything. But God, in love, as love, decided to create us. And He made us knowing we were going to rebel against Him. But He still did it. And He did it with a plan…a truly awesome plan…a plan to save us that would involve sending His only Son to be killed on a cross. God decided that the punishment we deserved would be put on His one and only beloved Son. Why? Because God is awesome!
Can any of us do those things? Is there anything that is as awesome as God and His gospel?
Let’s reserve the word ‘awesome’ for the truly awesome One.
Everything is awesome? No. But everyone should worship the awesome One.
