Getting ready for Sunday

This week we come to one of the most controversial aspects of 1 Corinthians and indeed the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 5 we have an account of public, restorative, Church discipline. Many, such as Mark Dever and Mark Driscioll see this as a dangerously ignored aspect of the work of the local church today.

I wonder, how do you feel about coming to church to hear a sermon on Church discipline?

Are you tempted to sleep in or pop to another church for the day?

What is it about church discipline that gives us such a negative response?

Maybe it’s because of these guys….

We’ll be watching more of these guys on Sunday as they represent (albeit in silly terms) our negative experiences of church discipline – that is: petty and carried out by the power crazy.

Have a read of 1 Corinthians 5 and Matthew 18 (all of it to get the context of verses 15-17).

-Reflect on what Jesus and Paul are teaching and aiming at.

-Why do they want us to carry out church discipline?

See you Sunday (I hope!),

Jonathan
