Responding to the recession #1

I’ve been at home ‘ill’ today, and so thought I’d get back to writing this blog. I’ve got loads of Calvin quotes to put up, and an update on the banana event. But I thought I would start a little series looking at how different churches are responding to the recession.

First off is the mighty John Piper. He preached a wonderful and challenging message at the start of February that you can watch here.

Here are his 5 purposes of God in the recession:

  1. He intends for this recession to expose hidden sin and so bring us to repentance and cleansing.
  2. He intends to wake us up to the constant and desperate condition of the developing world where there is always and only recession of the worst kind.
  3. He intends to relocate the roots of our joy in his grace rather than in our goods, in his mercy rather than our money, in his worth rather than our wealth.
  4. He intends to advance his saving mission in the world—the spread of the gospel and the growth of his church—precisely at a time when human resources are least able to support it. This is how he guards his glory.
  5. He intends for the church to care for its hurting members and to grow in the gift of love.

I pray we use this recession His purpose.

Next up, Covenant Life Church…

News from around the e-table. Things are getting ‘worse’, and yet worst to come: economy, jobs, living etc. Thinking: Running from Karma police, old response to old situation, isn’t it what we all are doing right now.

Instead of calming ourselves down to the point when we ARE able to go inside, look at ourselves, see ourselves, understand what and who we truly are, what are our strengths and weaknesses, and yes limitations from standpoint of our past, our genetics, our talents, what we know to do best, what we ARE equipped to do best,
and what we’re not designed to do at all…. Instead of stepping back, relaxing, taking a deep breath, and continue breathing allowing anxiety and fears to go away, and us reconnecting with ourselves… we continue running around, chasing what we don’t need, we continue wanting even though the things we want maybe not at all for our highest good.

Time is different now. My honest belief is that no fake will be allowed, we no longer can fool the Universe, and we can’t fool ourselves. We need to relax, bring ourselves into the state that will allow us to really see what is important in our lives, who we are, why we are. Then we will know what to do. Then opportunities will fall onto our laps. Then we’ll see doors opened.

Shooting arrays of emails to jobs agents, chatting on a phone, watching TV, staying in bed in depression, walking all day long in pj and drinking is NOT an answer. None of it is going to bring you closer to yourself.

Breath, meditate, walk outside, take that workshop or retreat even if money is scarce, invest in yourself now, while there is still time to do that. Money will run off at some point, if answer ‘who am I, what do I need to do’ is not answered by then, it will be much more difficult to do later on.

    Breathing…. Elena
